Ofcom has reported that certain regions of Britain won’t be capable of make local calls without needing the area code as phone numbers in some areas are running out.

The scheme is going to be started in Bournemouth in 2012, with other areas which are short of numbers such as Aberdeen, Bradford, Brighton, Cambridge and Milton Keynes looking set to join the scheme by 2016.

All kinds of other areas have also been highlighted as possibly needing the use of area codes over the next several years, but places including London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Edinburgh aren’t impacted because they have smaller area codes.

Ofcom also stated that more phone number providers have put stress on the supply of numbers and some of them are actually keeping hold of numbers and it turns out it is issues like this which have ended in the scarcity. To deter this, Ofcom will now be billing providers 10p for each number to make certain they use numbers more efficiently, an expense which won’t be transferred onto the public.
